I was reading a few posts that discussed Bean pickups. These photos might be of interest to some. I took them out of a standard because an artist I bought had Dimarzios and I wanted the Beans in the artist rather than the standard.
Anyways, this is what they look like. If you look up close, you can see that between the pickup and the metal casing, there was silicone squirted in, like from a caulk gun. Clear silicone. I think if you took a razor, you could loosen it and get the ctual pickup out from the metal casing. I was not about to go that far though......

I HAVE found a place that has the exact bolts that you see. And, though I haqve procrastinated, I WILL get them soon G.C. If anyone else needs some, let me know.

the bolts are usually 1/4-20. I think they are one inch, you should check. MSC has all the bolts you could ever dream of.

Cool information..! Does anyone know why one pickup has more holes than the other? Is that to reduce the magnet size and therefore output? Is the one with the extra holes the neck pickup? or bridge? I have a very weak bean pickup that I want to have rewound so any pickup info is helpful...thanks!

Lindy Fralin will rewind Bean pickups and hes the only one I would trust.
Ive seen humbuckers with all holes and some with no holes. I think it was just a matter of what was made at the time as far as the spacers go. Im not sure but Ive just seen nothing consistant.
The problem with the pickups is the silicone. It doesnt let go, ever. So you pretty much destroy the pickup to take it apart. My buddies TB2000 was in a house fire and it cooked the silicone enough were it loosened, but the finish etc was gone too.

The one with less holes is the bridge pickup. And I have no clue as to what the holes do, why they are there or how they effect the tone. I still can't understand wh the Bean pickups are hotter than most active pickups like the Seymore Duncans (sp?)....No clue, but they rock. To be totally honest, I do like the tone of the single coils on a TB500 best. But, the mo-jo of a good artist makes up for that in spades. Plus, just roll down the volume for less push.

couldn't you take a razor or an "exacto-knife" and cut either side of the silicne, the pry the pickup out with a screwdriver? I would not be surprised if that would be do-able. Damn, now I am jonsin' to try this......

Oh, I totally spaced....on the bridge pickup, there are the 2 holes for the bolts, then the 4 screw-like do-hickies are shims to allow the bridge pickup to sit up higher. For some reason, having to do with mathimatical enjineering, the bridge pickup needs shims to sit right or it would be too low.

The ones Ive seen, getting the pickup out of the cover is half the battle, youll then need to get the silicone from the coils, wires, etc.
The bridge must be closer to the strings and hotter as the string vibration are much less the closer you get to the bridge. So to make the 2 pickups balanced the bridge must be closer and hotter. This is the reason, as far as I can tell, TB500 bridge pickups are so shrill, as they are right against the bridge getting the faint brittle high end of the strings vibrations.

Real Guitars in SF had a TB humbucker that someone had drilled holes in the top of. The entire pickup had been disassembled, and inside were a pair of 70's Fender humbucker bobbins. Exact same pickup used on the Tele Custom of the 70's and also sold by Fender as an after market part in the late 70's. Everything was covered in clear caulk as well.

So are you claiming that the pickups are just standard 70's Tele Deluxe Fender humbucker pickups with custom TB covers? If so, that should back up info from a TB article I referenced in a different post.
Or are you stating that only the bobbins were used and that TB wound their own pickups?

This was around 1997 that I saw the pickup and it was really a mess. It did look as if the bobbins were original to the pickup as they were covered in the same caulk, but I couldn't tell you if TB had wound the coils or if Fender had. I'd be curious to know if Fender bought the bobbins from a supplier (perhaps TB did the same), or if they were manufactured at the Fender plant in Fullerton, which is maybe an hour or so drive from Sun Valley depending on your motor skills. The Fender base plate I believe was omitted, which raises the question, did TB discard them or simply purchase the bobbins, magnets and poles ? I was hunting for Bean pickups at the time and found an NOS pair at Chris' Guitars on Lankershim in North Hollywood. The one at Real Guitars was completely hopeless and they wanted 100 bucks for it, otherwise I would have bought it just for it's forensic fun. I have contact info for McElwee from a decade ago, if I can find it I'll see where it leads us.

The pickups are not WRH fenders with TB covers. Although the WRH is a great sounding pickup and with a few alterations is a great candidate for a TB which is missing originals.

I cant remember where, but I read that TB did buy bobbins from Fender but wound them in the shop. Similar I suppose to TB using Gibson knobs until Gibson quit selling them to him.
