i just stopped by guitar center's vintage store to look at some guitar, and when i told the guy that i had a couple of TB's his eyes got big and he immediately wanted to know if i wanted to trade them in...he was completely convinced that prices were going up regardless how crappy the overall market for all things investment might be.
so then i dropped by my buddy's place - he is a vintage guitar dealer - and asked him if he had the same impression. surprisingly, he did...but no one is sure why...
apparently TB's are bucking trends in the overall solid-body guitar market at present...anyone have any thoughts that might explain this? are they just wrong?

I would guess that the people who buy guitars at Guitar Center are not the same people who buy guitars on ebay. So even though prices are tanking on ebay, GC customers are a whole different ballgame. Doesn't mean that GC will give you a fair price for your guitar though. Related to this is also the quantity thing: in the past couple of years, nobody has wanted to sell their TBs, and you couldn't find one to buy even if you had the money. But in the past several months, there have been many on ebay and elsewhere, because people need the cash. So I don't think these people are completely wrong, just mostly wrong ;)

Prices on many name brand vintage guitars went crazy over the last few years, while Travis Beans were just bumping along at modest prices. For example (using very round numbers) an original early 60's strat might have gone from 5k up to 20k and now back to 10k over the last 5-10 years. Meanwhile a Travis Bean Standard went from 1k to 3k with a few nutty asking prices in between. Of course there are always exceptions on the low and high side, but it seems on average that Bean prices are more steady without all the crazy escalation and collapse. But I think this is primarily because they have not gotten into that high end realm where rational thinking goes out the window. Travis Beans are still priced like valuable instruments rather than volatile collectibles....or tulip bulbs.

i didn't explain it well, but these guys seemed to think that there was very recent demand growth for TB's, as in the last six months...i figured there was some new star i didn't know about playing one...surprising given that ebay stats indicate the opposite...

Maybe its just the gallo factor? The guitar center dudes probably call him first anytime they come across a good example. But I think he only wants custom colored artists and wedges. Oh and then there is that website: www.igotthisdomainsoicouldbuytravisbeans.com.....maybe that's the guy who is creating the illusion of escalating prices? I think ebay is a more accurate reflection of real values.

choose "make" then Travis Bean" if this link does not get you there direct. Which store did you go into, edp? I wonder what they would offer for a nice colored artist?
