hello,
i am absolutely amazed!! i have never seen any kind of obsession with guitar tone associated with any other band other than that with shellac.
i guess it hit me when i saw them at martyr's in chicago a few weeks ago. i was standing a few feet away from bob weston in the "front row," and at one point he asked if anyone had a question, like they always do at every show. someone behind me asked what kind of tape machine they use to record with, and bob answered the question, then under his voice, said "why do people always ask us 'stupid' gear questions?"
he is right!! why do people keep thinking of shellac as a "gear" band?? it is ridiculous!! at a later point in the show, some guy asked what size todd traynor's drums were...give me a break.
the fact is that they are NEVER going to tell you , or anyone else, what their guitar setup is. so why obsess about it? what is wrong with appreciating their sound for what it is, and using that influence in your own music? why do paople have to obsess about what kind of pickups albini has in his TB500, or what strings traynor uses on his bass? IT IS JUST A GUITAR!!
i am convinced that if the energy used to find out what albini's tone cap rating on his bridge pickup is, was instead used to sit down with a guitar in an attempt to produce a unique and original sound, then the world would not be hurting, and maybe someone would do something crazy like create a new song or tone.
i agree that it is interesting to find out how albini's guitar tone is generated. but for the love of christ, it has been posted on numerous guitar sites for quite some time now, and i think it is time to move on.

Hear hear!
I'm all for people finding their own sound. In the latest discussion of Steve's sound, I said just that. Who the hell wants to sound like anyone else?
I think there is a difference, though, in the academic side of why people like to ruminate on such stuff, and what they are going to do with that information. I love chatting about this stuff the way other people like to talk about socket wrenches or frying pans. My intent, however, has never been to match Andy Gill's tone, but it's cool to figure those things out. The way I look at it, is if I learn something from Gill and another nugget from Albini (hmmm....I wonder what a metal pick sounds like) Marty Willson-Piper, Joe Pass and Andy Summers, and I use those nuggets to eke out my own thing, then that's kind of cool. Very few guitar players live in a vacuum, you know? At the same time, I do agree with you that guitargeek.com addresses this stuff better than anywhere else.

when asked if the guitargeek setup was correct, steve said that he doesn't use a pedal to split the signal to the two amps, he uses a Y cable. and that other than that, it's pretty much right on.
