So, I have a Marshall cab loaded with Celestion Vintage 30s. I also own a Avatar 2x12 cab with Vintage 30 and G12H30. I've been thinking about adding some greenbacks to the 4x12 (possibly x pattern with 2 greenbacks and 2 v30s). Anyone have any thoughts, recommendations or suggestions? I like the idea of having something breakup a little easier in there. I absolutely love the v30/G12H30 mix in the the 2x12, but I think that might be a touch bright/aggressive in the 4x12 (my main cab).
In another post, the Orange cab was brought up. I definitely like Orange cabs.. anyone know what that standard speaker configuration is for those (I'm sure it's all over the place, but wanted to ask in case it was a 'set' configuration, etc)?

I don't think that this is entirely what you're thinking, but one thing I like to do is to use a A/B switch so that I can mix different amps with different cabinets. This allows me the flexibility to use whatever cab/amp I like at the moment and not have to mess around with rewiring cabs; it also allows me to have different tones. I am a big fan of Celestion speakers but currently I am using Eminence; I think that in the long run, I prefer the Celestion V30's to any Eminence design.
As for the Orange cabs, I think when you buy them new, they are loader with Celestion V30's and are 16 ohms - does that sound right guys? - but I have played an older, vintage cab (which sounded 10 times better then the newer cab) that was wired both for 8 ohm and 16, I liked that particular cab better in 8 ohms. It never ceases to amaze me that tone is a little science but mostly art, meaning that depending on how you set up your gear you can get different (sometimes drastic) results in tonal characteristics; that is cool but frustrating at times.

yeah.. I was thinking about switching amps. I wish load splitters were cheap. I like the idea of switching amps.. I hate the idea of hauling two rigs to shows. But.. with that said, I was thinking it would be cool to stack two heads on top of my Marshall. It's a stereo cab, so I could push 2 8ohm loads to left and right. I could change speakers (if needed) and run two heads.. and switch input signal. Hmmmm.
I do like the v30s. I'm not sure what's going on in my head.. just feel antsy.. need a change.

Haha, I hear you about the "change" factor!
When I first started to use a A/B switcher, there wasn't many options. I discovered Lelhe switchers by accident and couldn't be happier, the only drawback is that they are not cheap - but worth the money in my opinion. Radial makes a switcher, but I cannot speak for it's value:

In all, it is a major pain in the butt to drag another cab and/or another amp out to shows, but in my personal opinion and experience, it is worth it.

Same setup in my Orange: 4 x V30 @ 16ohm
I have a Hiwatt cab with G12T-85s, and those speakers seem to have a higher degree of gain saturation (or whatever) than the V30s. But I'm not experienced enough to know how much of the speaker I hear and how much is the cab. So...the Hiwatt is "louder". It's also ported and front loaded. I don't know how different or advantageous that is in cabinet design.
Hank, I think there are a lot of ways to wire and pair speakers down into lower resistance levels. Of course the Knucklehead is adjustable, and that Marshall may sound a little bit better wired down to 8ohms. Still, I'm not totally sure about any of that.
I'd love to hear the New Brut / Obstructures aluminum cabs.
