So, I played my TB2000 for 3 hours tonight. It has REALLY old strings, put them on in about 1978, and even with such old well-used strings, the sustain is amazing. I put it on the Petersen Strobe tuner and its still set up just like it was way back in the old days.
It gets hauled out for recording sessions. (hear it on The Shins new Flake Music CD)
The Beans really sound great through a "big" system, 'cause they have a big sound.
Fun to play this thing again. I'd forgotten just how easy it plays.

Haha, yes the strings are old. That gives it a more punchy sound, less sustain, and a bit darker. Thats what a lot of people like who record in my studio, so I follow the path of least resistance...leave the old strings in place.

Are those flatwound strings? What brand and gage? I have a set of Ernie Ball flats (group II 50-105) on mine (#454) that are about 14 years old. They still sound great, not dead and still play harmonics well. Rounds seemed too harsh and buzzed the frets more than I preferred, when playing in first position.

Wow, its been awhile, I am not sure if those strings are Rotosound or something else.
They are "ground round" strings. They start out as regular round wire wrap, and then they grind them flat. That way the sustain is much better since there is a much smaller area where the string wraps touch each other just like it is with a standard round wrap wire. They don't feel quite so smooth as flat wound.
These strings were really bright when they were new.
The sizes? oh boy...I measured them with my digital micrometer. They are:
G = 0.048
D = 0.061
A = 0.083
E = 0.108
