Wow too bad it was refinished from original white. ouch! I see this as an auction for travis bean parts: A nice original standard neck and a stripped body. Maybe the bridge and pickguard are original....but maybe not. The non original pickups are a real buzzkill......still a cool player but I don't see how it adds up to $2500.

There's a lotta misinformation in that listing. I know that a few forum members have either owned or seen or known about that guitar. All I will say is that, sure, it was refinished from white, but it was not refinished from original white, if you get my drift. Still a nice looking guitar.

Is this guitar a reproduction or just highly modified?

it appears to be original, just highly modified (pu's, finish). since the replacement pu's are from kevin (electrical guitar company) i would assume it's a great player's instrument.

this is interesting... this bean 891 was offered to me 3 months ago. at that time it was not refinished and the control cap was koa without the white colour. something strange must happen to her in a very short time !!!

hmmmmm....Claus, is it possible it had a different body when it was offered to you? Maybe the owner switched necks and bodies with another Bean?

I am fairly sure that this guitar was recently refinished in white, and then re-refinished back to natural.

nope. I checked the pics the seller send me, and it is def. that guitar on e-bay. the koa is 100 % the same...
maybe this time it should look like a refinished white one, so its history is more interesting ? but I do not know. anyway, this could be a nice playing bean for a fair price ( 2500 ).

Hi,

Just to clear up any misinformation, I was the short lived owner of this guitar. I had to sell because of finances for a family emergency.

The white paint in the cavity is a latex based silver oxide shielding paint because unfortunately those ECG single coils are extremely noisy. I know some of the folks on here will frown upon adding anything like that but I had antiicipated using this guitar as my primary gigging instrument.

It was originally Koa and still is. The finish was very rough from a previous overspray. I sanded it down and 5 coats of Nitro were applied.

Even with the finish confusion and the replacement pickups, the guitar is outstanding and plays amazing. Whoever buys it will be pleasantly surprised.

Jonarobb, thanks for the clarification. Are you the current owner or did you sell it to this seller? Do you know if the pickguard and bridge are original or not? It certainly has nice looking koa which will be greatly enhanced by an original spec refin. It looks like you got your starting price at least...

Shielding the control cavity really has nothing to do with the noise of the pickups. With the covers being metal they are in fact shielded on all sides, so adding more shielding down the line would have no effect at all. I actually try and steer people clear of aluminum covers as it chokes the sound of the pickups down. Either way for those interested, they are wax potted as well as epoxy potted. This insures, in my experience, that the pickup will remain non microphonic.

They are fantastic and well constructed. And sound amazing. But they're single coils, and as such, particularly living in NYC, are still prone to an enormous amount of 60 cycle and RF noise regardless of the metal case , particularly in Manhattan. Shielding down the line, particularly the cavity can and does help to keep the RF noise to a minimum.

Non-original pick-ups? Maybe that explains why there aren't any offers on it (there is an offer on the other 1000 for sale on ebay). What in the world were they thinking when they took the TB pick-ups off the TB guitar? Do you suppose they put the pick-ups on a lighter weight ax hoping (in vain) to get the Bean sound? Peggy

actually there's already one bid on it, didn't you notice? I'd never take pickups out of a Bean, but people did all kinds of crazy things, so you never know what the story might have been.

¦ forgive me for not minding my own business, but it would seem to me that the pups were probably pulled when Beans were just guitars and going for a few hundred dollars (people did crazy things in the 80's ¦ look at how many old Strats had a Floyd installed) ¦ with regard to the single coils, I bet they sound awesome and in my opinion are more versatile ¦ finally, why not give us a little You Tube demo and show us how great those single coils sound ¦

Hey Joefish, If everybody minded their own business, nobody would ever say anything! hehe

Yes, I bet you are probably right in guessing this guitar experienced EddieVanHalen idus...lets just be thankful it does not have a damned Floyd Rose on there....phew! At least everybody's blow dried hair eventually fell out and did not ruin any guitars!

Is it Friday yet?

Joe - I don't believe that the seller is a member of da board. The person who was talking about having owned it had to sell in an emergency. That said, my EGC with the same pickups in it sounds great. Kevin's pickup designs are really interesting, and I know he takes a lot of pride in them, and for good reason. The neck position can get a huge humbucker-like sound in the right situation.

Hey Charlie and rlrlrl ¦ thanks for talking to me ¦ I kind of had the feeling that I was a thread killer ¦. I guess intellectually and musically, my nethanderalism must of shown through ¦

Since I'm working around the house today and waiting for the paint to dry ¦ I figured it's about time for one of my long winded useless posts ¦.

¦ I'm two months into playing my Wedge daily ¦. And I'm just blown away by it ¦ I'm limited with only having a Twin, but it's really awesome ¦ the flat fretboard took some getting use to, but I'm in love with it.

¦ It is not too heavy ¦ the mass has to contribute to the sound

¦ People talk about balance ¦ "It's not balanced" ¦ not true ¦ with a strap ¦ (a little lower than I wear my Tele) ¦ it's perfect and very comfortable ¦I find it very balanced ¦ I'm starting to think that their R & D folks came up with the design/shape/size for a reason ¦ it almost floats ¦ (watch Peggy play)

¦ the aluminum ¦ it's awesome ¦ I love the feel ¦ I keep thinking about how LA was the center of the universe for aviation back then ¦ Skunk Works ¦ who knows what the rest of the batch of aluminum from our guitars went into ¦ (I recently heard that Mr.Randall ¦ an aviation enthusiast, suggested to Mr. Fender that the new guitar be called the Stratocaster ¦ after the new bomber ¦ the B-52 ¦. "Stratofortress")

¦the tone ¦ the bridge pick up ¦ after two months of playing ¦ alternating between my Tele and Wedge to a back up track ¦ I've fallen in love with playing it ... the alternating, between guitars (with the same settings on the Twin and ¦ as I was saying above my nethanderalism with regard to still using a Distortion ) gave me a chance to learn how to make the Wedge bark ¦ as a result, it really can be a Fender killer ¦ since I use a Twin, the Wedge is strictly for growling - not for rhythm ¦

I feel very privileged that my back up guitar is a Wedge ¦ I like to think of it as a custom LA Hot Rod Guitar from the 70's ¦ nothing special ¦ just an extremely well made ¦ nasty guitar with a rosewood fingerboard with an old school humbucker in the bridge ¦

Finally, I'd sure like to hear Mr. Weber (Wedge #30) share his thoughts.

Joe
