For those interested in aluminum instruments, here's a interesting bass for sale. $1,200.

http://boulder.craigslist.org/msg/2713655369.html

From the ad: "During the 1930?s (the Aluminum Double Bass Patent was issued in 1932) the Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA) produced aluminum upright basses (From 1929 To 1934). The entire body, neck and scroll were made out of seamlessly welded aluminum and were often covered with a convincing (from 20 feet!) faux wood grain finish. Information suggests that only 500 double basses were made. To find one of these basses today with it's original finish in pristine condition is rare as most are well worn or have been sandblasted."

Funny this should show up here now. I just saw Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks, New York's only and long-running 1920s and 30s style jazz/dance band... a really great group! And Vince plays one of these, in addition to bass saxophone and tuba, different variations on bass frequencies. His is completely stripped, or never had finish? Very striking, a big metal bass!

This bass is currently sitting in my office. Soon it will be shipped to EGC in Florida. It sounds remarkably good even with plastic strings. The initial tone when plucked is much like a wooden bass but then it resonates through the metal body and is quite distinctive. It's in good condition for an 80 year old instrument. Definitely built to last.

Phooey, the ad 'has been removed'. I wanted to see it. I will try googling images. Thanks for the heads up! Peggy
