Any ideas who actually made this thing?? Seems like ANYTHING original, especially anything with a 500 type body would at least have the "T" cut out of the headstock.

Those are some of the lowest-quality and vaguest photos I've ever seen on Ebay, especially for a $7000 asking price. The body appears to be a blank with no routing, and since the 500 was designed after the company had made a bunch of very well-made guitars, I don't see why the prototype for the 500 would look that rough. In my experience, Ebay stuff never ends up looking better than the photos, so I'd be pretty sceptical. I guess the weird thing is, if it's at least 25 years old, it doesn't seem like 500s were so expensive back then that it would be worth making a knock-off by hand.

It also looks like the neck goes all the way to the endpin, instead of the bridge like on the production guitars. And why would the patent number be stamped inside the neck under the fingerboard? It's a weird one.

This is interesting. A search on the US Patent and Trademark Office website using patent #3,072,007 does reveal that a patent was awarded for an aluminum guitar neck to a Glenn Burke from Eugene OR on January 8, 1963. The patent states テ「ぎナ"This invention relates to an electric guitar, and has as its primary object the provision of an improved guitar which is characterized by a metal neck portion, preferably aluminum, which is hollow, thus in combination with the body of the guitar affording an additional sounding boardテ「ぎツ". Check it out. The drawing filed with the patent shows a neck that looks similar to the neck pictured in the eBay post. Perhaps this is a prototype for that patent? I agree with Greg that if this was associated with any of Travisテ「ぎ┐s prototypes the テ「ぎナ"Tテ「ぎツ" would somehow be incorporated. I would also add that it would be hard to say that this original patent didnテ「ぎ┐t influence Travisテ「ぎ┐s design.

OK! Burke makes much more sense than TB on this one. Burke did make an aluminum neck guitar, actually called the first aluminum neck guitar... But we know Rickenbacker was actually first.(Frying pan). Anyway, the Burke did have a headstock like the one on ebay.

It looks like someone took a Burke neck and was going to make some kind of TB500 thing out of it. The Travis Bean guitars were much better looking than the Burke guitar, so no surprise that someone would go TB with it.

I wouldn't mind having that neck and finishing it out to an original Burke just to add to my collection of aluminum neck guitars. However, 7K is WAY more than I would give for it.

Thanks for the help!

Hi Guys,

I just posted a couple of photo's of the Travis Bean prototype which has a headstock without the T-shape.

Regards, Jetze
