Can anyone help with suggestions/solutions to this "bad idea" I can't get out of my head?

I have a TB1000S that sounds great, of course, but I greatly prefer the sound of my TB500. I prefer to play the 1000 in my band, though, for a number of reasons that I don't think are necessarily relevant to this question.

So, are there single coil pick-ups that will sound like the pick-ups in my TB500 that will fit under the pick-up covers on a TB1000? In other words, I'd like to keep the look of the 1000, but change the sound.

Thanks.

Why not just have a tech split the coils and add push/pull volume pots to switch them. That way you can have the best of both worlds,Or you could remove one volume pot and replace it with a coil split switch and have one master volume.Either way save the original pots so you can return it back to original.Good Luck!

Kris, this would be a good question for Kevin at Electrical. He has done custom wound 500 spec singe coils, and has done single coils in humbucker size enclosures as well. I'm sure there would be a bit of a wait, but I'd bet that you would be happy with the result.

I've done this very thing to my tb1000. Not, uh.... Not a job to do yourself. I killed the pickups when I pried them out of their cases. I drove down to Pensacola to see Kevin and he had his guy re-wind them with four-conductor leads - they actually sound better than they did originally! He pointed out a few inconsistencies with the original pups. "You can tell these were made at 5:00 on a Friday" I think he said.

Anyway, wired each pickup to a mini toggle switch in the tone knob holes (I had removed the tone knobs and wired a single master volume years ago). The single coil is the exact same as what's in a TB500. Which, Kevin pointed out, is no different than what's in the bridge of a telecaster anyway. No magic to it, really. Anyway, it sounds great! A good way to cut through a couple of fuzz pedals.
