I don't think it's 'pre-serial'. They were pretty good about serials. 0-10 were prototypes, and 11-up were production. This bass has brass nut, so this eliminates super early TB2000 or prototype. The electronics cavity it opened up, the early versions had tight cavities following the contours of the pots.
Based on the electronics, I would guess we're talking 1976-1977 build probably in the #50 - #400 range. According to the Kaman article, the horns widened at #440 for basses. So this bass would be pre-#440.
As to why there is no serial - a couple of possibilities. - it was removed after the shop. I've seen this happen a few times for various reasons. - it could have been for an employee of the shop. There were a few that didn't want the serial in the headstock.
I only know of a few employees that wanted basses... and as far as I know, they still have them.
There probably is a serial on the shelf before the fingerboard (in front of the neck pickup). Lightly loosening the neck pickup and a flashlight, should yield what number it is. I would also consider removing the bridge and seeing if there is anything on the body under the bridge. Not having a serial in the electronics cavity is not that unusual.
Pretty interesting! hank

Thanks for the info! This stuff is really fascinating. When I first saw that bass, I found it hard to believe that it was produced with no serial number. On every TB that I have seen there was always a serial number stamped onto the neck extension in addition to the one on the pegface. You might have to release the neck to see it, but it should be there. As a matter of fact, that wedge bass that I re-fretted (which is detailed on the repair section of this site) had five serial numbers in total. The visible one on the pegface, the hidden one stamped on the neck extension, two written in sharpie on the body (under the bridge base, and inside the electronics cavity), and one more scribed underneath the brass nut. I have also seen them handwritten inside the neck extension pocket. The ones written in sharpie in the control cavity and/or neck pocket are very useful because it is an easy way to tell if a body has been refinished (without blacklight). I always wondered why they stamped the aluminum twice...it just seemed like overkill to me, maybe this is why. In case a customer or employee wanted one without a visible serial number on the pegface. Just guessing...
