A have a Travis Bean Bass (serial number 109) in my workshop and the owner tells me the sound has rapidly deteriorated from an excellent sound to a 'thuddy nasal' sound on either or both pickups. Can anyone offer me any possibly reason for this and suggest a cure? I would be very grateful for any advice on this.

Operating on an either/or assumption ... i.e the problem is either with the pickups OR the wiring in the control cavity - a few easy substitutions should narrow it down. Easy stuff first. How about the cord from guitar to amp? No? Contact cleaner on pots? Blow pots out with compressed air? (#109 IS an oldie). If you unsolder either end of an .02 capacitor, and the problem goes away, replace one or both tone capacitors. If none of this works, I'd try shunting one of the pickups past ALL the wiring, straight to the output jack. You could splice a short section of co-ax between the pickup lead & output jack, or you could just go direct through the switch. (you'd need to unsolder both volume pots). In the states? Welcome to call 775-685-8801. (PST) Let it ring. Occasionally, a pickup would just "go bad" for reasons undiscernible. Would still read 12k ohms & magnets tested ok, but sound was clearly "wrong". Let me know what you find.

I always catch my errors AFTER posting. Another possibility might be a short in the tone pot. Sometimes, at full clockwise, an old pot will short. Back it off & jiggle a little. The unsolder capacitor test will tell you if it's in the tone circuit. Substitution will tell you if it's the capacitor or the pot.
