Hi all,

This is my first post so take it easy on me.

I have recently found an opportunity to purchase a TB1000S. The guitar has a spot on the back where 'belt rash' was refinished over. This refinished area appears to be about 3"X5" and is very visibly refinished as it is a darker color. Other than the refinishing, the guitar is 100% original, but does not come with the OHSC.

The seller is asking 2200 for this guitar. I know that TB1000s usually go for mid 2k's on ebay these days so I see this as a chance to get a TB for a reasonable price (as i cant bring myself to spend 3k on a guitar right now).

My questions for the group are:

#1 Do you think 2200 is fair for a bean that is not 100% original?

#2 How much do you think this partial refinish on the back will affect the guitar's desirability to collectors? I know I would myself rather have a 100% hardware original bean with a refinish spot on the back that looks presentable over a beat-to-heck bean that is purely 100% original finish and all.

My main concern is that i am spending more than the value of my car on a guitar. Anyone have words of wisdom besides the ole 'you should get it man!'? Unfortunately I need more justification than 'i want it' :D

Thanks in advance for your help,

Thomas

Hello and welcome to the forum!

I think you're in a tough position. If you wait, you might never see a TB1000S sell less than $3K, and you had a chance to buy one at $2200. I've seen some pretty seriously beat Beans sell for over $2000, so I would say it's a pretty 'safe' investment. I think it comes down to what's the point? If you're about rockin' a Bean and feelin' it's full glory, you gotta do what you gotta do to get one, and that's the bottom line. If you're about collecting or investing .. then you could wait, etc. for a better deal or when you have more money to spend.

True, you're spending more on the guitar as your car. But that's comparing apples to oranges. I've owned two cars since I bought my TB1000S. I've seen friends come and go, I've changed 3 jobs in that time. But my Bean sits on the stand .. still sounding great. Buying a Bean is like getting married. It's something special.. more special than other materialistic things. Beans have souls and history and killer tone, and that's cool. That's why people love them, that's why the prices keep going up, and that's why everyday more people want one.

If you're focused, no matter what, you'll pick one up, but it won't be easy to pick one up less than $2K. I also think, you'll be able to turn it around if you don't like it, or when you see the Bean of your dreams down the road. The demand is just too high, and the supply is just too low.

You definitely see a hit on value. If it's up on eBay with another Standard, the better quality Standard will win. But you don't see a long list of Bean auctions on eBay. Usually, you see one a week on average. I've seen nice quality TB1000S sell for $3K, so without seeing how bad the refinish is, I think you'd still do okay on value. At least the refinish was on the back! I would say that $2500 is the going rate for TB1000S lately.

Good luck on you decision. I'm sure you'll get some great advice with this thread. Some really great, dedicated Bean nuts here.

Buy it, it will be well worth it. It seems like a good deal and i dont think anything with the finish would really destroy the value much at this point. You wont regret it at all and Im sure if you did, you can get your money back out whenever you want. I just sold a beat up Standard for 3000.00.

Yeah.. the market is funny. The other day a Standard sells for almost 5000, then yesterday a nice Artist sold for only 2700. The Standard was a white finish (aged to yellow/cream).. so I can see that one fetching a higher price, but I was surprised with the Artist selling under 3K.

I did not get the chance to buy the guitar. The guy selling it said that he would hold it for me, and email me detailed pictures of the guitar.

He never emailed the pictures and when I called saturday to go play the guitar, he told me he had sold it thursday. I guess that's what I get for waiting and also for dealing with people on craigslist.

:(

looks like it was not to be... thanks for all the advice guys. I will be sure to let everyone know if i ever get a chance at another.

that sucks but now you know. any bean close to $2000, standard, artist, 2000, unless it's got major issues, you've got to pull the trigger immediately.

by the way, if i was in the market for a bean right now i'd seriously consider bidding on the EGC 500 that's up there right now.

thomas...

That's a bummer. In the Bean world you need to be lightening quick. Right now there is a Standard on eBay (TB1000S #1370).

http://cgi.ebay.com/Rare-.....ZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Might be worth contacting them to see if they would be willing to close the auction and sell to you (no current bids).. I doubt they will, but it would be worth a shot, it's more than the $2200 you were willing to spend, and has some small issues, etc. (weird knurling on the neck), but overall it looks pretty good.

Good luck in your quest.

Don't worry about the pitting on the neck.....a good shop can fix that for you and make it look like new again.
