My rosewood fretboard is starting to separate from the aluminum neck about halfway down the neck. This is an early version bass without the flat alum plate under the rosewood. Do I need to completely remove the fretboard to reattach or can I ooz some epoxy in at the affected area only. If I should remove the fretboard completely...How do i do it, with heat or? Its interesting that where the fretboard is delaminating the tone is pretty dead.

Hello charlie
I would contact Kevin directly. I mentioned this to him the other day, and he had some suggestions on how to repair this. I would hate to misquote him or miss an important details trying to describe that conversation.. so I would recommend calling him or emailing him. He's definitely dealt with this in the past, and had ideas to avoid completely removing the fingerboard to repair this problem.

Hey joe, hank, humbuck...thanks for feedback on this. I have to put this project on the back burner for a month or so but am looking forward to contacting Kevin at some point....or if he posts here in the meantime for other bean owners to benefit even better.
I have been tempted to put a little rubber cement in there for a temporary fix, since I know that would be easily reversible and might help dampen the vibrating rosewood to aluminum characteristic. Epoxy always freaks me out a bit...such a permanent commitment.

I bought mine from a friend after it fell over onto concrete and the fretboard sprung loose. I think I paid 2, or 300 for it. Anyway, I very carefully removed the fretboard, Lightly sanded the bottom to remove all glue, used some killer solvent, (I forget the name, but it will eat plastic) and used a small brass brush to clean the machine markings on the neck, removing ALL glue. I built a jig to clamp the fretboard down evenly onto the neck. I used a two part epoxy that sure did smell and resemble "JB weld". Spread it thin and even onto the neck, and clamped it for two days. That was about 20 years ago. No problems, Slight relief in neck, everything else is true. Plays GREAT!!!
