Does painting a koa TB-2000 decrease its value substantially?

I would think so, plus it would be a mortal sin in the eyes of the Koa Gods. I wouldn't risk angering them.; ) Seriously, any time you refinish a vintage instrument you decrease its value. You also run the risk of screwing with its tone.

Don't Do it! I would search for an already finished/re-finished bean to paint. But if it is natural KOA, I would stay away from defacing it. That is some nice wood. Koa God

I third the motion. One of my 2000's has alot of the finish gone from the natural koa. It will stay that way. TAKE A LESSON AND LEARN I have a refinished 54 Precision.......course I got it out of a guys closet and it was that fool who had stripped it......and sold it to me in 1975 for $25. True story. I can't scream cause it's STILL a 54, but oh, if it only had the original finish.....but what the hell- no one else gets it anyway until they pry it loose from my......... same for my BEANS.

I guess that was a stupid question to ask in the fist place. I'm looking for a finished TB-2000, but they seem to be few and far between TB-2000's that are Koa. Jake

If you're never going to sell it, why worry!

I reckon go for it. Koa looks as ugly as sin for the most part anyway - and often wears quite badly on old natural finish basses. Honestly, I would pay more for a good refinish on a bean than a worn koa guitar.
