I've been curious about body types for the TB2000 as well.
I've handled about a dozen or so, and only know of 4 types:
-Prototype Bass 0
-Thick Bodies (early runs)
-Thin Bodies (late)
-Wedges
There are lefties out there (Chris has a photo of one with
his Wedge #37,) if you consider those body variations.
I also remember hearing the Wedges have slight
variations (Vincent or Chosei, can you confirm?)
I've never seen a shortscale bass, so I'm not sure if it
has a different body.
As you know, the more mass on the body, the more low
end, but boy are they heavy (#0 is 14 pounds!)
I advise getting a thick bodied bass for recording purposes,
and a thin one for gigging.
Here's some insight from the Kaman Article:

The TB2000 Bass was introduced in late 1974. The first prototype bass had the serial number 0 and is of similar construction to the first ten guitars. However, it is much more like a production guitar in that it doesn't have that "handmade" look of the first ten guitars. This bass is pictured in the first catalogue of the TB2000 models. This bass also had an aluminum nut, the only one made this way. All other production Travis Beans were made with brass nuts. The neck was hand carved by Travis and has a thick squarish feel. It was solid as was the section in the body. The body had a 1/4 edge radius and was Koa. Production started with serial number 11 and the bodies were more rounded and contoured. They were all Koa and made in natural and all the same colors as the guitars. Fretless versions were also available as was a short scale bass. In all about twelve short scale basses were made, two of which were for Bill Wyman in October '78, serial number 892 and 893. The last bass made was serial number 1033. In all there were 1023 basses made.

The article is incorrect about the aluminum nut. The first few
production basses had aluminum nuts, as seen on #20.

Good to see you on the board.. it's been a while!
These lumy nuts have me puzzled. Just recently TB2000 #33 is shown with an aluminum-looking nut as well. #33 almost seems to be plated since you can almost see brass wearing through at the E slot.

I've asked a few employees about these nuts, and none of them remembered making lumy nuts or working with them.. except one. The head machinist remembered making a few for experimental aluminum nuts, but did not remember if any were used for production. Seeing this, I decided to contact the man himself and ask. I spoke with Travis, and he said there was one bass that had a aluminum nut. They experimented with some guitars, but aluminum nuts were horrible for nut material due to the string kinking.
I asked if the first 20-40 basses might have had a different nut.. and he said "no way". I also asked about plated nuts, and he said they did not plate the nuts. Only plated parts were the saddles, and he did not like plating due to possible wear showing.
Very interesting stuff!

That's interesting that Travis said that about the aluminum nuts, because the original brochures I have (for the standard and bass models) indicate "Handmade Reynolds 6061-T6 aluminum nut" as one of the specifications.

I highly doubt it was plated. You can see that there is something
red/orangish reflected on the headstock, I assume the nut is
reflecting the same material as well.
So does anyone else have any more info about the TB2000
body types? Odd that the guitars had so many variations,
but the basses only had one major revision.
