I have $600 to spend on a guitar or bass and I would very much appreciate any recommendations.

Do you have any recommendations for any used guitars? (I like older equipment, but I don't know much in regards to what to buy and what to stay away from)

If you found this site because of an interest in aluminum neck guitars, you could get an aluminum neck Kramer for that price or under (well under for a bass, approx 400 and up for a guitar). They are no TBs, but they are a great guitar for the money, especially the 450G (I have played/owned a 250G, DMZ 1000, DMZ 2000 and a DMZ 3000 and the 450G is my favorite by far for feel, playability and sound). They are very sturdy, powerful feeling and sounding and since they don't cost a fortune you can experiment with them if you want. Thats just my two cents. Also, you can never go wrong with an Epiphone SG. That was my first guitar I bought when I was 15 for $175 used and still have it. It has taken quite a beating and still does the job.
Great question.
