Thanks for posting my Travis Bean! As per the listing, it does have some battle scars and plenty of dings, scratches and what not, but that's because it was played and loved.
It really is a good sounding Bean, but I'm preaching to the choir here, ain't I!!!

Hey Jim,
I must commend you on a nice demonstration of listing a guitar on ebay the right way. Good lighting and detailed photos of all the right stuff, etc etc. The days of throwing a couple crappy photos up there and expecting wild bidding are over.
By the way, I love the beans that have been played alot! That is a cool one for sure.

does anyone know what this guitar sold for? I know he price was increased so no one would buy it so he could take it to a show. However, the starting price of 3,995 seemed extremely high for this well worn guitar.

Little high? It sold at the show no problem....A Travis Bean no matter how much road it has seen, is still a Travis Bean. It was a guitar that had to be put in someone's hands to fully appreciate why it was so "Worn".
Suffice it to say, it is a great guitar!

didn't mean to offend at all, plenty of people like a guitar to show a littler wear or age how ever you want to describe it
I check here all the time and have seen nicer (in only my opinion) go for lower and seen much worse go for higher- I am just doing my best to gauge what mine is worth so I can get a fair price and give a fair product in return

In my personal opinion no guitar's WHOLE BRAND should be at such a price that only collectors in California or the northeast could afford to own them. Especially a guitar that has such great sonic characteristics (young, broke musicians trying to make great recordings). But I suppose that is supply and demand, for better or worse. Of course in my personal slant view of things, it seems that those who could most benefit from and adore these guitars are the ones who could never afford it, ie touring/aspiring musicians. Then again if I was a wealthy collector who was once a young touring or aspiring musician I would be thinking 'hey, supply and demand, I suffered once and now I can own my dream guitar.' Of course I'm not there yet, so I'll check back in in a couple of decades.

That agrument has been around too long...okay, so when Bean's were only 1000.00, why didn't anyone want one? Look, I remember when bursts were just a used guitar, then Clapton and Bloomfield (and others) started playing them in the mid 60's and know they are 100's of g's and musicians are crying they are too expensive for them to own....
Look, there are only so many Bean's and no every guitarist would be able to own one even if they were free.

I agree with you, but the reason that argument has been around for too long is that all of the really good guitars have gone through that same process you mentioned, sonow we're left with like 1983 fender squires made in Japan as the last quality bargain guitar. (That's just an example that popped into my head.)
But you are right, it is supply and demand. I suppose if you have the time and patience you could find a good deal.
I think we're both right.
It happens, it happens for a reason, and it really sucks.

Adjusted for inflation, the cost of a Travis Bean today isn't so much different from what it was in 1977. According to the "Inflation Calculator" site, what cost $1000 in 1977 would cost $3384.97 in 2007. Add in the extraordinary quality and popularity and limited availability of a Travis Bean, and it is perfectly reasonable that they should be priced above $4K.
I think if you're a careful shopper you can find some great used guitars for under $500. If you can spend $1,000 you can find some amazing new guitars. Check out - http://www.philgawen.com/phigaguitars.htm
If you must have a metal neck, you can get an EGC for $2,200 - $2,500.
Even if you can't afford a Bean, there is no reason to settle for a Squire piece of crap.
