Curious, what was/when/where the first time you saw a Travis Bean.. and it had an impact for you. I know I've seen Garcia footage in the past.. or Heart, etc. But I never took note.

For me.. Shellac of North America / 1996ish? / The Moose Lodge, Missoula, MT

Sunn O)))

I am sad to say that I was, "late to the game" as they say...because it wasn't until I had seen Stephen O'Malley play his Bean that these amazing instruments pop on my guitar radar; I'm glad they did regardless of the time frame.

Oh, I forgot to mention that it was in 2006.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor. I think it was '99/'00. I also saw the same guitarist play one in Fly Pan Am in (I think) 2001.

I had no idea what kind of guitar it was at the time, I just thought it sounded amazing and the T headstock was cool.

I eventually found out what kind of guitar it was when I saw another Bean being played with Sunn 0))) a few years later. A friend of mine at the gig was like "Did you see that Travis Bean??"

Ah hah!

I now own two.

Criteria in Columbus, 2004.

That show technically accounts for my first AND second Bean sightings. Both guitarists were playing Beans; one white Standard and one cream Artist.

I guess you could say that was a turning point for me.

And, Hank, that was also the first time that I had ever seen a Rivera Knucklehead. The other amplifier on stage was a Framus Dragon. Lots of TONE that night!

Fun fact: my first Bean was formerly owned by a member of Godspeed...

Just to elaborate on Bastin's fun fact- that was the same exact guitar that JLH75 saw- in fact, I also saw it being played in Fly Pan Am (Fall of 2002) - it was the first Travis bean guitar I had ever seen in person and now actually own that guitar. (Thanks again, Matt! Still playing it every day)

The first Bean I ever saw was a TB 2000, when I saw Low in 2002.
This was at the Echo in Los Angeles.
Before they started, it was leaning against the amp- I had seen a picture of a Travis Bean before, I can't remember where- it might have been a picture of Keith Levene in PIL- but I remember thinking to myself, wow! It's one of those cool guitars with a T in the headstock and was amazed by its beauty in real life.
The tone floored me.

I've heard that Stephen O'Malley of Sunn O))) bought his TB from a member of Godspeed... as well. It is possible that the same Bean I saw Gy!be play is the same guitar that Sunn O))) uses. I know that there are/were a few Beans owned by Gy!be anyway.

Neither of my Beans were owned by Gy!be as far as I know.

As far as I know- two of the guitarists in Godspeed had Travis Beans. (one also had a Kramer)

A Standard -

and an Artist (this is the guitar that belonged to Bastin that I now own)

hope that helps.

The Jesus Lizard, at the Corner Hotel, Melbourne, Australia 1998 - Duane Dennison was playing a strange green guitar with what I thought looked like a neck coated in aluminium or wrapped in some sort of foil. I don't think it was too long after that that my brother and me went on our hunt for a TB1000. The first one I ever bought was a fantastic artist in pearl blue (from the U.S.). But even more bizarrely, about a year later my brother found a red Wedge sitting in a humble inner city guitar store in Melbourne for $1300.00 (which was equivalent to $US 700 at the time). I don't think we even realised how unlikely that discovery was at the time. It was probably the only Wedge ever to come to Australia. Those were the days!

like theNewTerritories the first bean i saw was zak sally's tb2000 - but this was when low played the knitting factory in los angeles in 2004 (they played 'turn' from long division that night!). i kept thinking it was made by some texan guy or something with that big open T headstock .. it looked like a branding iron or something to me. did some googly searches the next day and eventually figured out it was a travis bean.

Capital Centre 9-25-76

You can get a CD of it now.

A great show for the Dead, they were reviving and changing before the drugs and burnout began doing them in a few years later.

Garcia played a TB500-otherworldly and too cool!

Criteria, Sokol Underground, Omaha, NE, 2004.

It only took about 2 weeks for me to become totally obsessed and another 2 months to buy a bean, standard #1711. Fantastic instrument.

Unfortunately, I sold it to make rent a couple of years ago. I'll buy another someday.

Can't remember the year but it was early to mid 90's in Vancouver at an intimate venue called the Starfish Room. I had never heard of them but Silkworm was opening for another band... Can't remember the other band, that's how much Silkworm blew my mind.

My friend and I had never seen or heard of Travis Bean guitars before either. We were both in awe at the force, tone and sound... Later that year I heard Shellac for the first time too...

As chance had it probably a decade later that guitar ended up in my hands! It is no collector's guitar that's for sure, but still making great sounds :)

Folk Arts Music, Boulder, CO - 1978ish
I took guitar lessons in the basement of this music shop. They had a koa 1000S in the shop one day and even though I was only 14 at the time they let me try it out briefly.

I saw my first Bean in 1992, Slash was playing it for "Bad Obsession", and that guitar tone ripped my face off! Since that day I wish i had one, but it's very difficult to get a TB here in Italy...

My first sighting was in a shop years ago, it was a 500 and I thought it looked wierd it cost about £200, but I wanted a Jaguar so popped an extra £250 for that.

Epic fail.

i saw my first bean right after i got my les paul. the other guitar player in the band was jealous and went out and bought a bean. this was in 1979. i played it for about 2 minutes and hated it. the neck was cold and fatter than my LP. now he's passed away and willed it to me. so now after about 20 hours of playing it i'm singing a differant tune. once that neck warms up it plays great. some of the hottest pickups i've used. the bite is incredible but i don't see where it has any more sustain that the les paul.

My first sighting was a picture in the gatefold album "What a Long Strange Trip It's Been". I think I was 10. I knew all the Teles, Strats, & Les Pauls, but couldn't figure out what the cool guitar was that Jerry was holding. I thought it was the coolest. The flowery Ibanez Weir had & crazy knobbed Alembic of Phil's weren't nearly as interesting as the Bean... The search began then (I'm guessing that was 1982?).
