OK, it's not a Travis Bean, but Kevin and his crew at the Electrical Guitar Company make some awesome aluminum guitars. They have just unveiled a new all-aluminum ax that was designed by Agostino Tilotta. It has 3 p-90 style pickups (ala Garcia's early model 500s) and a rather unique body style. Before I pass final judgement I'd like to hear it in use. I am sure the quality is on par with Kevin's amazing instruments. While being a big fan of Agos' sonically, I have to say that the IsontonaG leaves me cold aesthetically. I might like it more with the traditional EGC headstock and black P-90 covers. Either way I hope it's a huge sucess. I'm with you ggates on the headstock and body. I think black or silver pickup covers would look better. I also don't care for the location of the pickup switch. There is plenty of room by the knobs and there would be less chance of impaling your hand (or accidentally switching positions) while rocking out.
However, I'm very glad to see EGC developing their own distinct body styles and designs.

Personally I was totally blown away by this design from first sight. It's totally elegant in its simplicity, while looking quite unlike any guitar I've ever seen before. I spoke to Kevin about it a few days ago and he seemed surprised himself at how different he sounded. He thought it had a certain chime and sparkle to it that he normally associated with Velenos. I can't wait to hear how it sounds.

I played my EGC custom 500 at rehearsal last night. I just had some set up work done to take care of a little fret buzz and to improve the action. It was fantastic. The sound is so crisp and clear and with the adjustment the action is phenomenal. Someday I hope to play a Bean 500 so I can compare, but I'm delighted with the EGC. EGCs really are the "next generation" of aluminum instruments. It has been a pleasure to watch the development of their products over the past few years.

i personally like the new design. it looks like a guitar only an italian could design (wandre, galanti, eko come to mind). i wish the EGC line was available to demo at select stores throughout the country. i think it would help potential buyers hone in on what they are looking for. at that price point i can't imagine test driving them first.

Thanks for the kind off Vincent. I do travel to LA and NYC on occasion and I'll let you know the next time I'm headed your way.
Which brings up a question: Has anyone traveled on a plane with their Bean (or other aluminum instrument) before? If yes, did you check it? What kind of case did you use? I can't imagine it would be allowed as carry-on.

I believe they have some EGCs for sale at Make N Music in Chicago, or at least they list a few on gbase. Might be more expensive than buying them from Kevin directly, but at least you can go in and play one. I've played 4 different ones at various times, and none were any short of spectacular.

Flying with a Bean: I had to check mine and I only had a crappy cardboard case so I stuffed clothing all around the guitar to the point where the cardboard case was bulging, then I taped the crap out of it and put airport fragile stickers all over it. I watched the screeners as it went through the xray machine. ( I wish I could have seen those images actually). They looked at it for a minute or so then ran it through and did not need to cut open my insane packing job.

I have travelled with both a Kramer 250g and a Kramer XKG10 domestically and internationally under different circumstances with no damage whatsoever to the guitars. (touch wood) Flying on Jet blue I was able to bring it aboard and put it in the overhead okay although afterwards I would bring the guitar with me through security and check it at the gate (they put it below with children's strollers and things like that) and then when the flight is over you can collect it at the gate. This was in an original Kramer case. Internationally I just checked it with my luggage in a Gator case. It was fine although both times it got left behind and din't make it to my connecting flights and so later on the airline sent the guitar to me a few days later which initially was incredibly nerve wracking. What you really have to watch out for is those cheap flights you can get in Europe- the reason they are so cheap has something to do with the way they handle luggage and some people I know have had their guitars damaged this way. Hope this info is helpful. If you have a good solid roadcase I think it is okay to check it with your luggage. By the way this is my first post, glad to be here.

bloody hell vincent's in a good mood. and why not? anyway, i think the body on that guitar that looks gorgeous. however the headstock looks a little gash. the body reminds me of those old hagstroms actually. great body. id order it with the bean style headstock that he often does though.
just for the record the egc 500 is much tougher than the tb500. Much tougher. early models like mine however are prone to bad set ups and treble bleeding pick ups, though im told these problems have been sorted on newer models.

I bought an EGC Standard from Kevin earlier this year and it is very cool. He was very acommodating making me a guitar with a thicker than standard neck and a 12" radius fretboard (which I know was difficult for him). Kevin's single coils are very high output with even the cleanest amps being overdriven and the sound has a very distinct bite to it (very similar to a Travis). Acoustically the intrument sounds like a lively hollow body with the distinctive 'aluminum ring' added. I strongly recommend Kevin's guitars.
My TB1000A has a less than optimum original nut which needs to be removed and reinstalled for better string alignment, however I am thinking about keeping the original nut in its case and trying an aluminum nut like the EGC's. Has anyone else tried this on a Travis?

I got a EGC Series One (which replaced the custom 500 line) and I love it. The quality is rediculously good and working with Kevin was great. He'll build the guitar you want, to your specs. He's very hands on, even after the sale. I can't recommend him enough. I love the guitar so much, it has crossed my mind to sell my Bean and buy an all aluminum standard.
Vincent, I live in NYC, so if you ever want to try out the Series One, let me know. I'd love to see some of your guitars, especially the Veleno's, which I have never seen in person.

AlxT, I replaced the nut on my Bean 1000S after much deliberation and I've never looked back. Bottom line was the brass nut was causing tuning and intonation problems. I had my local shop re-do the whole thing using the Buzz Feiten tuning system and a bone nut. I understood what I was doing, but my Bean (933) was never going to be a "collector". The pick guard is gone and something dented the headstock at some point in the instrument's life.
The guitar is exceptional now. It stays in tune and sounds great. If you have problems with the nut and you want to PLAY the guitar, get it fixed. Keeping the guitar as a working instrument is the most important thing. Keep the brass nut, just in case or get Kevin to make you an aluminum one.
