In the database there are only 2 natural wood Wedge Basses listed: 1 Magnolia and 1 Koa. I would love to see photos. Ownership is listed as NA. Is the mysterious NA out there and ready to be welcomed into the TB community?

I'm not sure if he added his TB4000 to the datebase, but Tim from the band Silkworm and now Bottomless Pit owns a TB4000 that is bare koa. He paid $300 for it, after some friends of his spotted it hanging on a wall in a restaurant. He went to the restaurant on tour, pretended to not know what it was, and asked the owner if he would sell it. He said if he did sell it, it'd be for a "lot" of money. Tim asked what a lot of money was, and the guy said $300. It was spray painted metallic blue, so he stripped that paint off, and kept it the way it is now.
Tim plays baritone guitars in Bottomless Pit, which are all made by Electrical Guitar Company. He's currently waiting for his 3rd EGC (which is next in line to be made after my all-aluminum 12-string bass is done)
The only OTHER bare wood TB400 I've seen is the one that someone cut a semi-circle in to each side. Someone sold it on eBay. I uploaded pics of it it Flickr. Search for "badcomrade" on there, and you'll probably find pics of it.

How does a wood wedge bass sound in comparison to other travis bean basses?

They would sound the same since all the necks are aluminum and the pick-ups are solid mounted to them. The only difference would be aesthetics, the painted ones have paint over Koa wood, the natural Koa wood would look ... ummm ... as natural ... as a Wedge bass can. I'm curious about how they look. I spent a lot of time at the TB shop in the seventies but I don't remember ever seeing a natural Koa Wedge.

You never saw any natural Koa wedges because they painted all of them :)

I think the story about how he found it is posted somewhere on this site.
He doesn't play that bass anymore, because he has switched to Electrical Guitar Company baritone guitars in his new band Bottomless Pit. He used to play a TB1000 that he slightly modified to accept baritone strings while Silkworm were still around (along with the wedge).

Thanks for the photos, and the explanation of why I never saw one in the shop!
I like how it looks - the metal and wood - kind of organic.

Omigosh, that poor Wedge looks like a shark took bites. Do you think they cut the semi-circles out so they could play it sitting down easier? The strap on mine broke once and I had a jolly time trying to hold on to it as I finished playing (fortunately it happened during the last song of the show). Vincent plays his Wedge guitar sitting down so I know it's possible to find the balance point if one tries.
