I came across a interesting listing today. We have a 3 piece Koa body Standard, but no serial on the headstock. I called, and no serial was present in the electronics cavity OR under the neck pickup.
Non original knobs, pickups and bridge/pole pieces.
BIN at $4,249.00

interestingly i own a thin horn frankenbean 1000a that im certain isnt real, but im starting to wonder about its origins. its not a bailey. it has no serial number on the headstock but is exactly the same as a normal bean neck. 1102 is scrawled on the neck under the neck pick up but not on the headstock. these pick ups have 'travis bean' written on the top and are an exact mimic. they strike me as old parts. the body appears to be original. the electronics are certainly not original. i dont know much about it really. i bought it 5 years ago for below the market price thinking it was made up of parts and not original hence its price. maybe the bean on ebay came from the same place as this one?
the guitar on ebay - i dont think its real. stupid asking price too. the body is three piece which would be very odd/rare. the pick ups arent original etc. dodgy bridge. maybe its one of those necks that got disgarded because they were too mushy? i remember reading about a batch of necks from around the thin body era that werent deemed acceptable for sale and were not used on guitars sold by the company, which would match the body style on this.

So there is no way this is real? Really interested in it now that the price has been lowered, but am really skeptical!

What I heard, either from Travis or one of the other guys, is that they received a batch of aluminum billets that were improperly heat treated. The necks made from this material would deflect too easily when the guitar was strung and tuned. I don't know if they were all caught at the shop or if some of them were sold and then came back under warranty. These guitars are referred to in the notes as "softy".

I saw a lot of photos. Played it in person. Putting it together that it was a refin hence the exposed three piece body. Everything about it is right on specs wise so I purchased it. Paid around the same price I would for a EGC so I think I got a good deal. Might refinish it black!
