Very nice. Wish I could see the number. I know that TB2000 #749 is a Wyman bass... the date matches the Kaman article for October #892 and #893 for fretless basses.

Has anyone on the forum played any of the short scales? I guess there were only 5 or 6 of them, but I know at least a few did NOT belong to Wyman. I've always liked shortscale basses, but they tend to be boomy in a real 60s sort of way. I bet the aluminum neck makes it function much better at that scale length (30"?) than a conventional shortscale. As for that fretless one, maybe it's a whole other ballgame.

Interesting. I talked to the owner of TB2000 #892 and the bass is black with imron coated neck and long scale as you mentioned Kurt. Looks like the Kaman article is incorrect, and #941 and #942 are the actual short scales. #941 is in the database (states that it is a short scale) but is listed as 'Finished Color'. Do your notes mention paint on #941? If that's the case.. then we're looking at #942 as the bass in the photos.

According to the Kaman article, 12 short scale basses were produced. I haven't been able to verify this number 100%. I have heard various accounts of short scales made for others though.

I don't want to say anything bad about the Kaman article at all but one more possibly incorrect piece of info stated in there was that there were no left handed TB500s produced however (despite not having seen any photo evidence) there was someone on here a year or so ago offering one for sale for I believe $25K, claiming it ot be the only lefty TB500 ever made.
Not strictly to do with this thread, but worth a brief mention while discussing Bill Kaman's text...

I own the TB 500 lefty # 269
I ordered it in 1977 it took well over a year to get it as they had trouble making it in reverse and had to start over twice . I was in almost daily contact with them at the time as I was eager to get it . I never played in a band and never took it out of the house except to move in 1983 . The case is pristene . I had a buyer from in here who flaked out on me last month . I will not reveal his name as I don't feel it is necessary . I have some photos which I might share as I have with some members . I feel the $25,000 is fair as it is the only one ever produced . If I don't sell it I don't care . It will go sooner or later . I also own a pre CBS lefty strat which is rare also . Those guitars are going well over 25 . Too bad Hendrix isn't alive I'm sure he'd be into it . ........hope this clears up your misinformation

Hi Chuck,
Is it white? My brother's notes show TB500 # 269 with the initials "W" and "LH" next to the entry. It also shows it was finished possibly late April of 1979. Does that sound right?

awkwardsilence, I noted some 'updates' to the Kaman article. I'm hoping we'll be able to iron out a few more points. Currently, I'm working on getting some additional historical facts to add to the History area.. so stay tuned.

Thanks for the extra info on the lefty 500 Chuck and Obie, it's much appreciated as I've been wondering about it for some time.
Chuck, I totally agree that as it's such a unique guitar it has to be worth around what you were thinking and if I had the spare cash I'd seriously consider buying it (I'm a lefty player and own a left handed TB1000 Standard). I'd love to own a 500. I nearly bought a right handed one a couple of years ago with views to restringing it etc. but it just didn't feel right.
I'd really like to see your pictures of #269 if that's possible, simply as a lefty player whose main interest is Beans. I'm at: awkwardsilence (at) btinternet.com

Did you once list your lefty TB 500 on ebay (around 1997 or 1998)?
I swear I saw a white lefty TB500 on eBay back then.
I'm left handed, so I was always looking for "lefty" and "Travis Bean"

I don't think ebay was up in 98
I did have it in here a couple of years ago
I have now returned from vaca and intend to actively persue the sale of my unique Bean

eBay went online in September 1995.
Back then, you could get an artist for $500 and a standard for $300 or so.
I paid $660 for my bass on eBay in 1998.
Try getting a left-handed, painted, Travis / Marc engraved rare-ass-bass for that much today. :)
Good luck trying to get $25,000 for yours.

Dear Kurt, I have a question about your brother's notes. I think that you had said they started before the guitar I have a question about. It is white standard #1036. I popped off the pickup screws one day just because I like to poke around and wanted to see how the pickups were mounted, and I noticed that inside the neck is written "Jerry Garcia 7/10/79"

I have talked about this before on the forum here, but I don't think that I ever got a response from you. The guitar is 100% stock and I did not write this. we all know for sure that Garcia never played a standard and by 1979 he would have been long finished with Beans. In fact, this guitar was likely made closer to 1976 or 77. I just checked the pots and they read 1377619. So none if this really makes any sense. Whether this guitar could have been meant for Garcia or whether some crazy hippie was creating a hoax. But, as long as you have notes, can you check and see if there is anything written about 1000S #1036 that is out of the ordinary? I thank you very much and apologize to those of you who are having to read this nonsense for a second time.

The serial numbers in the book for Standards start at 1300, so that guitar isn't in the book. Sorry, can't shed any light on that little mystery.
