Hey there to anyone reading this!

Just acquired my first Bean. I have been wanting one for a while and finally settled on one that just recently popped up on Reverb. It is a modded out TB1000S #1637 possibly refinished in white. The seller was super cool & even went out of his way to overnight it me from California to Florida. However, when it arrived I noticed right away that it had a scalloped fingerboard. Felt like some kind sick joke or a nightmarish fever dream. Although i would never intentionally buy a guitar with a scalloped board, i really dig the guitar and would love to possibly put a new rosewood board on. I am concerned about degrading the value of the guitar though. The seller acknowledged that the scalloped board was not mentioned or properly shown in the listing and is willing to help comp me with some cash. Does anyone possibly have any idea of what kind price it would be to get this kind of job done?

Thanks in advance!

Dear Mattthorner, You mention you are new to Travis Bean guitars. With all due respect you also sound a bit naive. Excuse me. Anyone selling on Reverb knows what they are doing. Widows and folks who trip on rare items list on eBay. Reverb listers know the details and market value of everything they are selling. A scalloped fingerboard is the type of aberration both startling and obviously wrong. In any case, a perfect original finish white TB-1000 standard would be worth $4-5.5K. A refinished white TB-1000 standard worth about $2-2.8K. With a scalloped fingerboard it becomes more like a parts guitar. A talented luthier may need $1k to do a quality re-fret, re-board, and re-inlay on that cripple. However in the end it would still be a refinished TB-1000 standard with an unoriginal board. Unless you got it extremely cheap or the CA crooked seller is planing to refund you to that mark then I say return it ASAP. Hopefully it has an original case and all original parts? The sellers initials were not NP where they?

Yes, this was my first TB so I had very little knowledge of the going price for a player grade example. However, Ive been buying/selling vintage guitars, synths, & drum machines for years now & I do pretty well so I feel as if I have a good understanding of value when it comes to general issues like this one. I will admit that I overpaid after getting your opinion though. The seller (Ryan€„¢s Boutique) did not show close pictures or mention the scalloped fretboard so I feel like I got taken for a ride for the price that I paid. He definitely had intent to refund when it arrived as he immediately sent $500 back when I mentioned it. I€„¢ve shopped the repair around & definitely want full refund & hopefully he will comply. Huge bummer. Anyways, thanks for the insight.

I would agree with artwar's estimate of roughly 1k to get a well-done fretboard replacement and refret, though you could inquire with a few luthiers and see. My understanding is that the fretboards are epoxied on to the neck. One benefit of replacing the fretboard is that you could go with stainless frets, used on many newer high end instruments.

Player grade beans are uncommon, and players care more about the neck and pickups than the finish. As long as it plays like a bean, the body wasn't radically altered, and the pickups weren't changed, I would say a refinished standard was worth at least 3k. Travis Bean Designs will build you one for 4k if you wait a year.
