I own a 1000s and 1000a but mostly use my 1000a in my band. Recently I have been having a problem where the guitar, when run through my Ampeg V4 has a horrible feedback issue at stage volume, as well as a harsh but barely noticeable "squeal" sound on top of my normal tone. This was not always the case. I tried changing cords, cabs, amps, etc...the only 2 things that seem to work are:
1) going through my wife's bass amp sounds better 2) switch to my 1000s
To make it more confusing, I recently had my tubes and caps replaced on my V4 which ~may~ be when this all started. The problem also only exists when I have my amp set to 3000hz but not on 1000 or 300.
I played a show last night, REALLY loud, with my older 1000s and it was just fine. FWIW, I also tried one of the new Fender Jaguar HH through my rig and it was fine too.
I am guessing that my pickups are bad? They are slightly microphonic as well (i can talk into them and get some sound out of my amp)
Any ideas of what I should do? Also, I am in the Providence/Boston area...if there is a TB wizard out here.

microphonic pickups. take 'em out. soak 'em in wax. there are good tutorials online. do a google search on "potting guitar pickups."

thatdamnedfly - Would waxing a pickup thats already been epoxied have any effect? I thought TB pickups were epoxied, am I wrong?
giantrobot - are you running through any pedals (of any kind at all) or are you just plugging straight into the amp? Do you use the Hi-mid (3kHz) switch often? Bridge or Neck Pickup?
Do you have an squeal issue 1 - With your 1000A through any amp (excluding your wifes bass amp)? OR 2 - With your 1000A through your V4 (only) with the mid switch set to 3kHz?

i don't know if tb pickups are epoxied, but i do know that what it sounds like he's describing is microphonic feedback. and if it's the same through different amps (w/ the exception of a bass amp) then it's probably in the guitar.
it could be loose wires in the pickup causing it. it could be the steel baseplate causing it if it's come loose. it could be a loose magnet.
if the pickup is epoxied, then fixing the problem will be a pain, that is if it is the pickup.
the last time i diagnosed a microphonic pickup i eq'ed the amp 'til the squealing stopped. then held the guitar in front of the kick drum. boom. squeal. wax.
