confusing guitar. i would have thought that that serial number would mean wider horns.

I was curious and checked the database. It appears that the wide horns started somewhere between #1244 (noted as narrow) and #1293 (photo shows as wide) on the standards, thus making #1221 near the end of the narrow horn series. The other numbers on the database between 1244 and 1293 would help zero in on the actual change if we had that info from those or any other bean owners with serial numbers in that range...anyone?

Check this out....I have a small horned Bean that has a serial # that is later than another Bean I own which has larger horns!!! Go figure that one!
Also, I always wondered, were the artists and standards serial #s seperate, or did they just put the next # for whichever guitar they were making....example, if they made a standard, serial # 1200, then the next one was an artist, would that next artist be serial # 1201, or were they kept seperate?
I know they say less than 800 artists made, but I have an artist in the 1200 range, if I'm not mistaken.
Thanks.,

Hello dank

According to the Kaman article, they were stamped as if they were one line until they hit 1000, then they began to have their own number based off of model.

Here is the snip from the Kaman article:
"The run of serial numbers on Standards and Artists began with 21 and continued till 1000. At that point the lines were split and each continued with 1001, 1002, etc. While it is unclear if the production records of these firt 1000 guitars still exist, it is estimated that they were approximately 1/3 Artists and 2/3 Standards"

Hey were the bass guitars part of that early pre 1000 series? That would reduce the number of standards and artists somewhat. Another question I have is how were the total production numbers established? Are they actual numbers or estimates? If they are actual then one can subtract the number of standards or artists after 1000 (by using the last number produced for each model) to determine the number made before #1000...hmmmmm

I believe the bass line was entirely separate.. and this occurred with with the 1000 series only.

On your 'total production numbers', I believe this is an estimate. Kaman had a lot of knowledge and contacts with Bean back in the day, but I don't think they kept sparkling records in the shop. You also have to consider one-offs, customs and quality control throw outs skewing the numbers based strictly off of serial numbers alone.
