I am interested in acquiring a Travis Bean (TB1000S) in in the future. Are there any advice you would give to someone who is acquiring their first TB?

This would be my first $1000+ guitar and I want to make sure it is right for me. How might it be possible to try out the guitar to make sure the weight and distinctive neck is right for me? I come from playing a Fender Jazzmaster.

Further, since it seems that many sales are done online, without necessarily seeing the guitar in person, are there are tips for determining the quality of the guitar? Are there any places (physical or online) which are particularly good for securing a good deal price-wise? My understanding is that for TB1000S, we are looking in the range $3000-4000 USD range.

Side question: I see that EGC and Travis Bean Designs offer the TB1000S body shape, though I am not sure what they prices are. Would you recommend those over seeking out an original Bean?

Thanks!

Depending on its age, the neck and playability will be very different, so don't assume one 1000S will play like another. As best as I can tell the earlier models have slimmer necks. You should do everything possible to try the guitar before committing.

Also, they are very heavy compared to Jazzmasters.

Check it out in person!

These guitars are very expensive now, but they weren't always that way. There are ones that have been refinished, modified, had whammy bars installed, etc....

Did you get a bean? I own an original 1000S and a TBD 500 and I think the new TBD guitars are amazing. They cost $4 - $7K new which is similar to what an original bean sells for these days. Yes it will take a long time to receive once you order, but you can get exactly what you want.

I'm going to be making a post here about my experience, but I would avoid Travis Bean Designs like the plague. Keep in mind, I am an anomaly. Honestly, it has been one of the worst gear experiences of my life and definitely the worst customer service experience I've ever had. Especially considering the fact that I purchased an instrument that cost 4K.
