So BoulderBean posed this question in the somewhat epic (RE:I will pay $15,000 for a wedge) thread.

"Here's a question (perhaps for another thread): Are there any women playing Beans?"

I think this is a great question. The only one that came to mind is Rose from Poster Children. She had an entertaining story of the body actually splitting during a live performance. Also the RTMF enhanced CD shows that Bean.

Thanks!

I saw Steve Albini dressed in drag once. But he wasn't playing a bean... but that sorta counts, doesn't it?
I also remember reading an article of some band from Illinois that had a girl that played a Bean bass. She accidentally dropped it and it split in two. Had it repaired and went back to rockin' on it. Lets see, I can't remember the band, the girls name or what Bean!

I think we're talking about the same girl. Rose of PosterChildren out of Champaign, Illinois. Here is her story...

"my story is just that I have broken both my Travis Bean basses in half " one by accident and the other was sort of premeditated. The first one broke in half while I was playing in Florida " the sound started cutting in and out in the middle of a song, and, frenzied as usual, I glanced down at my pedals to make sure they were plugged in, then looked behind me to make sure my amp wasn't on fire (that's another story) and everything looked ok. I jumped and flailed around a little more (like I usually do on stage), we were still in the middle of a song, and then I reached my right hand down to turn up the knobs on the bass, and my hand hit my leg. The bass had broken in half, lengthwise, along the line where the metal neck meets the wood, and the bottom half was hanging down to my knee, by the electronics. I looked up in amazement, grinned because my first thought was, "Wow, that's soooo cool." Then I started crying, because I'm a damn crybaby, and I love my bass. That night we taped it together with duct tape, and it was fine. It sounded the same, for the rest of the tour. Long Live Travis Bean."

That is it, you nailed it. Actually I met them "back in the day", but... well, maybe you know how brain cells function...

I'm sure somewhere there are a few girls who play beans, but no doubt they do not have the gear obsession like us boys. Boys and their toys....sometimes its a little embarrassing, but what the hell, I still love Beans! Hey my daughter plays mine sometimes, does that count?

That's sort of a stupid assumption that "girls" do not have the same "gear obsession" that guys do.

The original Travis Bean "tribute page" (The cult of Travis Bean site) was run by a "girl". She plays a TB500. She uses it while performing her own music, and with the Glenn Branca 100 guitarist ensembles, etc.

OK so one girl out of how many? If you have ever been to a vintage guitar show, then you will know what I am talking about. It is basically hundreds of guys and a few bored girlfriends and wives AND very few actual female guitar wingnuts. I am not saying they don't exist, but they are definitely a very small minority. I wish this was not the case, but I have resigned myself to reality and do not pretend that gear obsession has any real existential significance. Fortunately, I still like women more than guitars. (except when I'm in trouble for buying another guitar)

That would be me. I play two TB's, but have been photographed with the 500 the most.

(hello, Chris!)

I do not speak Klingon, but I can sing along in Kobaiian.

Andrea Fiset of my old band Arab On Radar played a Travis Bean Bass; it has been sold sadly.

I offered my TB2000 to our bass player, she tried it and said it plays and sounds well but is way too heavy and ugly...

@ arabonradar
Great to see you here, I guess you€„˘ve been the Bean player in AOR? I really dig the records (especially the ones without bass...:-) and I wish I could have seen AOR live. Would you mind telling me something about your setup at that time - guitar tuning, effects, amps/cabs (I saw some weird-looking stuff in youtube videos)?
Thank you
okko

I've been playing Travis Bean Basses since 1976. If you google Steve Vai, Discography, Flexible Album, click on the mp3 clip of Salamanders In The Sun, you can hear me playing a fretless, tri-color Koa TB 2000 - the bass has beautiful smooth tone.
I still have #25 TB4000 Wedge Bass. When I play it, bass players line up by the stage to ask me - what is that? You can see a photo of it on The Runaways website, follow the trails to History, Peggy Foster Interview. I was playing for Bob Hodge (Little Feat) when the photo was taken, about 1999.
I'm definately a girl. Mark and Travis nick-named me "Foggy Pester".
I've never thought about it until now, but I don't know of any other girls playing Beans - I would like to meet them if there are some.

Notch up another one for Vincent. He is the supreme wedge hound.

Peggy - I'm sure the folks here will help you track down a fretless TB-2000. If Vincent is on the case, he'll find one. The guy is relentless!

Vincent Gallo is buying up Beans. I wonder why? I guess if anyone here knows him please tell him I would be willing to let him store my Beans for historical reasons. I am what they call a "starving musician" and live in a very porr neighborhood where crime is rampant. These guitars will be stolen soon enough I can imagine. If he would like to store them for me in a protected mansion I would be willing to let him do that.

Also if he would give me 250.00 to buy another "machine gun guitar" http://metalinjection.net.....s/31E81HVJAXL._SS500_.jpg which is what I play now, that would forward the music that should be being played through all these guitars which is not... that is "good music".

thanks
p.s. Andrea Fiset was a "legendary female Bean player" ask any kid in a sweater with a bike messanger bag in any neighborhood in any country.

Vincent, so long as you and Peggy did a fair deal and you're both happy, good for you. From what you wrote it sounds like you did her a favor. I hope she does find her true love yes, and I bet you'll have the easiest time helping her find it. Please let us know if you find her the fretless.

Best to not patronize and talk condescendingly to musicians who don't have your kind of money. Everybody's life is different, everybody's situation different.

I sampled the hell out of my Wedge. I played and recorded every note on every fret: whole notes, halfs, quarters, coda length notes, stacattos, hammer ons and hammer offs up and down, slides up and down, thumb slapping, you name it. I can put a bass track with that unique Wedge sound onto future songs by importing or recording the songs into my protools recording studio here at home, then duplicating the Wedge notes, dragging them to where I want them, and dropping them into the song (in the edit window) and applying fades as necessary. I also laid down a couple of solos that I intend to use as interludes for some songs as yet unwritten, and a bass track for an instrumental song I wrote that has been performed live but hasn't been recorded yet. Just for fun and nostalgia I also recorded two bass solos that Steve Vai wrote for me that I use as warm up exercizes. And I have a video: last Halloween, I did a Travis Bean Bass Free-Time Solo for my music performance class, wearing a blond dred-locks wig. It's posted on my Peggy Foster Bassplayer page on Facebook, along with some Runaways stuff. Hopefully, I won't be 'beanless' for long. I have to tell you that it feels weird, icky and lonely to be beanless. I will get my dream bean as soon as I find it. One more thing. I thought about this long and hard for months before I did it. Vincent loves my Wedge as much as I do. He promised that he would treat it like his own child. I have gotten to know Vincent, I see how much he loves his beans and how much integrity he has, I like him, a lot. Sincerely, Peggy

Hi Peggy ¦ I'd say you certainly have enough for that book or as I recommended earlier a synopsis of a yet to be written collaborative screenplay ¦

With regard to finding that dream bean, please know that I'm your man on the ground and at you service covering the Mid Atlantic region.
Your friend,

Joe

I guess that means no induction into the "Vincent Gallo Sociedad Honoraria No-Wavica" which recognizes excellence among one's peers for Made in Mexico then?

We have 2 females in our ranks (neither play Travis Bean guitars sadly enough).

OK no reason to be upset.

Collect on my rich comrade, better in your possession than in crackheads, pawn shops, or musical noodlers out in the Aeolian mode somewhere.

speaking of wedge basses, after reading vincents post about the plasmatics using them, and being rather embarrassed that i didnt know who they were, i checked them out on youtube and they are great! a song of theirs called 'wont you?' is particularly good. i wish more english bands played with some balls, like we used too back in the day. english hard rock bands either play like pussies or dont have any good songs.

anyway, sorry, rant over, continue.

Actually Vincent, I'd say that stealing someone's license plate and complaining bitterly about paint fumes from an art gallery in order to get them evicted would be filed under "poor". You're living the life of Riley in your loft safely insulated from any grime and out of touch with the real world.

much respect to the arab on radar. killer band.

I no longer see what any of this has to do with Women playing TB's, Guitars in general, music, or anything productive at all. If this is just going to be attacks on Vincent which force comments from Vincent that are turned into attacks on Vincent...
What do I know...except that we have been over this many times. I don't know Vincent Gallo or anyone else on this forum personally (not that I am aware of, anyway) and it is just a drag to hear everybody making digs at each other in this community.

I agree completely with TomWanderer and was about to post something similar this morning, but didn't know where to start. The insults and digs need to stop or this whole thing is going to fall apart. I know that our Admin is pretty fed up with the situation - and rightly so.

I also agree with chinesebookie, Arab On Radar is a cool band and I'm pleased to learn about Andrea Fiset playing a Bean.

Hey Boulder and Tom - actually if you look back a few posts, you'll see that this whole new situation was STARTED by Vincent, as a way of bragging that he got Peggy's bass. He took a dig specifically at me, because I had expressed my opinion a long time ago that a Wedge bass is too cool to sell, especially when it's your pride and joy. Well Vincent seems to have secretly held a grudge against me for writing that, because he brought it up months later, and also stopped responding to anything I wrote. I even emailed him to say "No hard feelings", but I got no response this time. He thinks I'm some sort of Gallo contrarian, whereas my only concern is about being respectful to one another (I actually agree with him about most things).

But what can you do when your "Please don't be a jerk" comments only get a "yawn" in response. If he wants to foster a sense of community, as he says he does -- and generally be a cool dude -- he could take the upper hand. He even revived the long dead Veleno thread to "yawn" at me. I've never gone out of my way to be rude to anyone, it's just not in me. And so this whole exchange has gotten me feeling really bad, to be honest, and I don't know why I'm even bothering to read this anymore, cause it's totally depressing. So thanks.

Vincent Gallo, zzzzz

rlrlrl, don't get depressed over some shallow wank on a forum. You can't take it personally when a person is rude and inconsiderate towards everyone in type or face to face. I can understand your frustration though. It's not directed towards you but instead projected from them.

admin, I suggest you add an ignore button as an update. It would make the forum more delightful to read.

Ignore button? If you are referring to ignoring Vincent Gallo then there wouldn't be much to read besides you guys envy or jealousy? and besides that he seems like one of the only people on the forum that know something besides conning even though there are some very nice and smart people on here specially greg baily what a geniune nice person as well
