Hi there. This is my first post, but far from my first time on the site.
I just came across a TB1000A (Serial number 317; unfinished near-black koa) here in Tokyo and I'm pretty sure it's been modded with new volume/tone knobs. I asked the guy if they were original and he said they were, but I have my doubts. Did TB ever make guitars with numberless black plastic knobs? None of the pics I've seen of A series guitars have knobs that look that cheap.
Thanks.

I am no expert but my TB1000S has the standard black knobs that I see on many vintage and all-original TB guitars but with the printing missing. I've never been able to ascertain whether they were made that way or a previous owner decided to make them disappear/they wore off with use. I have no idea (and I'm probably not helping much) but I feel my knobs are authentic anyway and will be interested to hear other replies to this one.

What size are the knobs on yours? Are they full-size, like on a Les Paul? The ones on the TB I'm looking at are quite small; they actually remind me a lot of the knobs on my Maxon distortion pedal.

I'm probably going to get it anyway. :)

Mine are definitely NOT that smal...they're what you see (black) on most versions and that's why I assume they are authentic. My TB1000S is 1691 and in the database. They have the little "bottle cap" indentation on the top.

serial number 317 TB-1000A would definitely have knobs installed from the factory exactly like knobs often called Gibson Speed knobs. Black/clear knobs with white lettering. Later TB-1000A production guitars would often have factory installed solid black knobs with white numbers that can sometimes wear off a bit. These solid black knobs were nearly identical in size to the Gibson speed knob. The small solid black knobs you describe make no sense for the guitar you describe and I would bet my life they are NOT original. I suggest you acquire 70's Gibson speed knobs and install those as those would have been what was originally installed.. Don't buy new vintage type Gibson speed knobs as they are slightly different and don't look that old. I believe the solid black knobs appear later than serial #317. Anyone with any other info or view please chime in.
