Oh and boy is his in bad looking shape.it plays awesome/sounds amazing.but all the knobs are ripped out of the body (except for one) the wood under the strings is totally curved down like he uses a chainsaw for a pick.

The TB2000 bob plays in Shellac is serial number 189. The reason it looked different than yours is because it is. Early TB2000's had narrower horns, the later models (like your 517 and my lefty 570) have wider horns. If I remember correctly, they gutted all the useless electronics (c'mon, who actually likes anything but the bridge pickup?) at the same time they took the bass apart to spray it shellac green and send the neck out to be re-fretted. If you're wondering how Bob gets that sound that you just can't quite get with your bass, it's not some fancy custom amp you may think you're looking at on stage, that's just a pretty box. What's inside it is a Traynor TS-50b bass head (50 watt transistor) being used as a pre amp in to a 400 watt per channel crown power base amp, which is driving the 2 15" mesa boogie speakers in his cabinets. He uses the traynor by itself when recording. It's got this "boost" switch on it that when used properly with the 2 volumes creates that slight breakup you hear on songs like Song Against Itself. And of course, he uses Rotosound strings (duh).
